Dark cloths work
best with dark hair & complexions while light cloths work best with
light hair & complexions. Darker clothing tends to minimize body
size, and light tones tend to emphasize body size. Avoid green &
yellow cloths they tend to have adverse affects on skin tone. Baggy
pants, shorts, and slacks do not photograph well and are not
recommended. For groups dress everyone in the same style of
clothing, do not mix casual and formal attire. Remember simple
attire photographs best and it is always a good idea to have several
additional clothing choices.
Full length
photographs of women should be of women wearing long skirts, pants,
or dark stockings. Bare arms tend to bring attention to themselves
and away from the face. When wearing a suit or sport jacket, men
should wear a long sleeve shirt.
If feet are to show
in the portrait, make certain shoes and stockings are in keeping
with the visual intent of the portrait. Light pastel clothing,
pants, dresses, shoes, or stockings look best in portraits taken
against a white or light background. A smile in a full length pose
can soften the look of a portrait, while a relaxed, non smiling pose
will look more fashionable. Men should have a fresh shave and
freshly shampooed hair cut about a week before photo shoot.
For an timeless
classic you may wish to try some black & white portraiture. Creative
possibilities can be endless so be sure to discuss with the
photographer your goals prior to the shoot.
